Before taking about why Regional Identity is crucial as National Identity let first tell you what is Regional Identity. Regional Identity is a feeling of being at home or belonging to an area at the mesoscale, therefore it is some where in middle between Local Identity and National Identity. 
           Now let us come to our topic why Regional Identity is crucial as National Identity ? 
=> Regional Identity is important. This is because :-

• Firstly, Regional Identity forms a primary base for democracy at National level. And this is very true. Once Michelle Nicolette said that ' If democracy dies at regional level, it will also die at National level. ' 
• Secondly, if there is development in regions then only there will be a collective development in the whole country.
• And also today's world is leading towards  ' individualisation '. So people lives and environment can be shaped through Regional Identity rather than categorisation as National. 
• Tibet in China, the Walloons in Belgium . The Swiss have a strong identity and from what I gather Swiss Germans Identity more with French Swiss than Germans from Bavaria or Austria, or am I wrong about that ?? Afghanistan might be another example. Or any nations with a weak sense of National Identity. Many countries are strongly regional but not strongly nationalists ( US UK, Italy ). I think there are few nations where the majority Identity more with their region than their nation. 

Thus, we can conclude that Regional Identity is crucial as National Identity.
